👋 From my experience: In Sweden, weather is not just small talk — it is a genuine shared experience. When the first snow falls, everyone talks about it. When summer finally arrives after the long winter, people beam with joy. Knowing weather words connects you to the Swedish emotional calendar in a way nothing else does.

The Four Seasons

Sweden's seasons are dramatic and deeply felt. Each one has its own mood, traditions, and vocabulary.

❄️
Vinter
Winter
Dark, cold, beautiful snow. Stockholm gets about 6 hours of daylight in December. Cosy culture (mysigt!) is essential.
🌸
Vår
Spring
Swedes burst outdoors the moment spring arrives. Even 10°C feels warm after winter. Everyone is suddenly happy.
☀️
Sommar
Summer
Midsommar (Midsummer) is the biggest celebration of the year. Long evenings, archipelago trips, and strawberries.
🍂
Höst
Autumn
Beautiful colours, crisp air, and the return of cosy evenings indoors. Swedes call this "höstmys" — autumn cosiness.

🌟 Expat tip: When a Swede compliments your Swedish and says "Du pratar svenska jättebra!" — enjoy it! The bar for this compliment is very low (they'll say it even if you just said three words), but it is 100% genuine. Swedes are truly delighted when expats try.

Small Talk with a Neighbour

Neighbour: Hej! Vilket väder idag, va?
Hi! What weather today, right?
Lahiru: Ja, det är ganska kallt! Men vackert med snön.
Yes, it is quite cold! But beautiful with the snow.
Neighbour: Precis! Hur har du det?
Exactly! How are you doing?
Lahiru: Det går bra, tack! Jag börjar gilla den svenska vintern.
Things are going well, thanks! I'm starting to like the Swedish winter.
Neighbour: Vad roligt! Du pratar svenska väldigt bra!
How nice! You speak Swedish very well!
Lahiru: Tack, jag försöker! Ha det bra!
Thank you, I'm trying! Take care!
Neighbour: Ha det bra! Vi ses!
Take care! See you!

New words: ganska = quite / rather · precis = exactly · börjar = starting to · försöker = trying · vi ses = see you

Your Challenge This Week

🎯 Try this: Next time you see your neighbour or a colleague at the door, open with a weather comment in Swedish. "Vilket väder idag!" or "Det är kallt idag, eller hur?" (It's cold today, isn't it?). You will get a warm smile every single time — Swedes are genuinely pleased when expats engage this way.
